Food and fun festival - February
The name really says it all. "Reykjavik Food and Fun Festival" is an event which combines outstanding culinary skills, fresh natural ingredients, Icelandic outdoor adventure and the world-famous Reykjavik nightlife to create the ultimate recipe for fun. The festival is held annually the last week of February and now 2010 is the ninth anniversary.
There are two elements of the festival which involves an international brigade of chefs and culinary people.
The first are the chefs which collaborate with Reykjavik's best restaurants. Each chef is assigned to one of the participating restaurants, where they prepare a special menu, working with Icelandic ingredients only. The menu is presented at each restaurant for an entire week. In addition, the chefs themselves ar on site during the festival.
The other element is the chef competition, which take place on the last day of the festival. The chefs compete by making three courses, made of Icelandic main ingredients. They have to make a fish course, a meat course and a dessert. The competition takes place in the kitchen of the Hotel and Restaurant School of Iceland. The competing chefs go to one of Reykjavik finest supermarket with their assistant cook student where they have an hour to shop for their ingredients for the competition. They cook for a grand international jury of chefs, journalists and other prominent persons in the food world. There will be awards for the best "Fish Course", the best "Meat Course" and the best "Dessert". At last there will be the overall "Reykjavik Food and Fun Festival - Chef of year 2010". Only one can win in each category.
The Food and Fun is a great event and an opportunity to meet chefs from both sides of the Atlantic. The chefs invited will be divided evenly from both USA and Europe. In last years many of the competing chefs have gone from being the "Food and Fun Chef of the Year" to being in the winning positions of Bocuse d'Or or their restaurants in the top places of the S.Pellegrino 50 Bests Restaurants or get their wanted and prestige Michelin star.
The Reykjavik Food and Fun Festival is a great opportunity for chefs to participate in and getting to meet their colleagues from different part of the world - to know, make friends and network with other culinary personalities
